Abiquiu Hiking Experiences
There are many fabulous and beautiful places for high desert hiking in Abiquiu. We will cover a few in this section and you will find additional information about hikes in The Casita when you check in.
THE CASITA DEL LAGO
You can hike right from the front door when you stay at The Casita del Lago. Â The home sits on 22 acres and is lakefront property. Â An old cow path leads down to the water and this is a wonderful area to hike.
Ghost Ranch has several trails that will take lead you through rock formations and forest regions. The trails range from from easy to difficult and all provide spectacular views.
Chimney Rock: This is the most popular hike. It has incredible views and takes about two hours. Round trip is 3 miles, climbs from 6,500 to 7,100 feet.
Box Canyon . This hike is four miles round trip, and increases from 6,400 to 6,900 feet.
Another very popular hike. This is a difficult hike and includes scaling up a chimney section of the rock. Round trip is 5 miles, the hike climbed from 6,500 to 7,100 feet. Plan for 3 – 4 hours.
Matrimonial Mesa: This is a short and easy hike which includes a number of different trails.
Mesa Trail: This is a short 40 minute hike, but it offers great views of Pedernal and Polvadera.
Hiking through the sandstone formations of Plaza Blanca is one of our favorite things to do. The area was made famous by Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings and became known by her as “The White Place”.
Hiking Pedernal is an adventure. It is about 7 miles round trip. People hike the mountain in all seasons, but the class 3 wall can be difficult in winter months. Pedernal is located very close to The Casita del Lago and more directions are included inside the home.
Fishing – Boating – Kayaking – Swimming – Rafting
The Casita del Lago sits on lakefront property, which provides many opportunities to enjoy Abiquiu Lake. If you have a boat, you can bring it and moor it in the cove beneath the home. Bring your kayaks and fishing poles. We can also help you plan fishing guide and Chama River rafting excursions.
The Abiquiu region is a wonderful place for trail riding and horseback riding. Ghost Ranch offers trail rides through the beautiful red rock formations and has a ride dedicated to passing by the sites painted by Georgia O’Keeffe. Horses can also be arranged for rides in the Carson National Forest and other public lands.
There are many day trips to local ski resorts, including Ski Santa Fe and Taos Ski Valley.
Golf is a year-round sport in New Mexico. Local courses include the highly rated Black Mesa Golf Club and the Towa Golf Course.
