Abiquiu rose to fame as being the home of Georgia O’Keeffe, who made the region come alive through her paintings. Tours can be taken of her home, studio and the locations of her famous paintings.
Today, Abiquiu is an artists’ colony, and many studios are located in the area for paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and wood carvings. Many studios are open for visits and Abiquiu Art Project offers studio tours to experience art where it happens, in the studios and the unique natural environment of the artists.
Also, the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour takes place every year over Columbus Day.
In addition to art, the filming industry had discovered the region. Many films are shot in the Abiquiu area, including:
- The Magnificent Seven (2016)
- The Lone Ranger (2013)
- Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
- Brothers (I) (2009)
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
- 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
- Walker, Texas Ranger (1993–2001) …
- Wild Wild West (1999)
- And More!
You can take tours that show the locations where many films were produced. Several of the lake scenes in Cowboys and Aliens were shot on the water in front of The Casita del Lago!
